SB 686 was just signed into law- and it’s yet another major blow to home rule. This bill, sponsored by Sen. McClain and supported by my opponent Chad Johnson, rewrites how “agricultural enclaves” can be developed in Florida.
Instead of going through the local planning process, where farmers, aquaculture operators, and residents have a voice, SB 686 creates a state-driven fast track for large landowners.
Here’s what that means:
– Less protection for farmland and working waterfronts
– More strain on water resources and rural infrastructure
– Faster sprawl into agricultural areas
– Fewer opportunities for the people who live here to shape what happens to their land
It undermines family farms. It puts pressure on aquaculture. And it hands more leverage, more power, to the biggest landowners and developers, while everyday residents, small farmers, and working families lose their say.
They’re the ones who lose when Tallahassee takes away local control….My opponent VOTED to take that power away from residents and local governments.
Our district deserves leaders who will stand with local farmers, local governments, and local families, not against them.
Rural communities deserve the right to decide how we grow, how we protect our land, and how we safeguard the industries that feed our families and sustain our economy.
I’m running because our district deserves a voice rooted in the people who live here — not the ones looking to profit off us. A Florida where home rule still means something.
